In 2024, seven years after the first study conducted in 2017, the Jasmin Roy Sophie Desmarais Foundation launched a second pan-Canadian study on sexual and gender diversity. This initiative is crucial in the aftermath of the pandemic as it aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the situation across Canada.
Our survey on sexual and gender diversity will serve as a platform to raise public awareness about the specific issues faced by LGBTQ+ communities in Canada. It will give a voice to marginalized people and shed light on the daily challenges they encounter. The dissemination of survey results on a national and local scale will ensure maximum outreach, thereby drawing citizens’ and media’s attention to the issues of homophobia and transphobia.
Currently, we are collecting data on homophobia and transphobia in various areas, such as education, employment, and health, as well as among Indigenous and racialized communities. This data will be crucial in developing tailored and effective educational programs across all sectors of society aimed at promoting the well-being of individuals of sexual and gender diversity. By highlighting the realities and needs of these individuals, this inclusive study will foster better understanding and greater recognition of the challenges ahead, contributing to public education.
The factual data collected will also support the development of inclusive and non-discriminatory policies. This survey will be a valuable tool in assessing the specific needs of sexually and gender-diverse communities and guiding policymakers in their decision-making processes. This information could thus promote legislative changes, government initiatives, action plans, and regulations aimed at protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals and combating homophobia and transphobia in all their forms.
Furthermore, this study will reinforce support for existing community organizations and enable a more targeted allocation of resources. Survey results can identify regions, population groups, and situations requiring increased support, aiding organizations in assessing their efforts and focusing their resources where they are most needed.
In summary, our study will play a crucial role in combating homophobia and transphobia in Canada. It will contribute to increased awareness, education, and the development of inclusive policies while strengthening support for organizations and enabling more effective use of available resources.
