Member of the Barreau du Québec, Guylaine Bachand has extensive experience in the field of media law, arts and communications. She has been a legal advisor in newsrooms of major media groups in addition to holding various management and project manager positions.
As President of the Conseil régional du Québec of the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council, she rendered numerous decisions regarding complaints by listeners on unduly negative portrayal and stereotyping based on ethnic origin, colour, age, gender or sexual orientation in broadcast programming and advertising.
She has acted as a volunteer lawyer for several years in the Canadian Bar Association’s program that introduces Secondary IV and V students to fundamental rights and educates them about the principles on which our democratic society is based.
In November 2016, the Government of Quebec appointed her Commissioner of the Commission d’enquête sur la protection de la confidentialité des sources journalistiques, whose mandate will be to make recommendations regarding best practices and concrete actions to be implemented to ensure compliance with the privilege protecting the identity of journalistic sources.
