Vacation = No Emails: The (Essential) Art of Disconnecting from Work

Summer is coming, the suitcases are open, the flip-flops are out… but your brain? Still tethered to Teams—or Google Meet, or Zoom—like it’s on a performance IV drip. If you’re one of those people secretly checking emails between ice cream cones, it might be time to rethink your priorities.

Unplugging from work isn’t laziness—it’s mental hygiene.

Our brains aren’t built to stay in “problem-solving mode” 12 months a year. Chronic stress, decision fatigue, and emotional exhaustion sneak up on us. Vacation isn’t a luxury—it’s an essential reset for our very human batteries.

Here are some practical strategies for a real break:

Prep before you leave. Let your colleagues know, delegate tasks, and most importantly, turn off your notifications. Your inbox will survive.

Create a symbolic break. Uninstall work apps or stash your work laptop… far, far away.

Be gentle with yourself. If the urge to “just take a quick look” arises, take a deep breath. The world will keep spinning without you (promise).

Fill your time with real rest. Read, move, lounge, or do absolutely nothing—all of it is highly productive for your well-being.

And if someone makes you feel guilty?
Gently remind them that you are NOT a Wi-Fi modem. You are a human being—and you deserve to disconnect in order to come back stronger.

Speaking of well-deserved rest…
The entire team at the Jasmin Roy Sophie Desmarais Foundation is proud of everything we’ve accomplished in the first half of 2025. After a full and meaningful spring, we will be taking a month-long break in July to return refreshed, motivated, and inspired to continue our mission with kindness and renewed energy.

Wishing you all a wonderful summer!
